Welcome to the HCB Lab
About
The Health Communication and Biometrics Lab (HCB Lab) focuses on the study of body image stigmas and health literacy improvement, using biopsychological approaches.
The HCB Lab is led by Dr. Kim Bissell, who has spent more than 20 years conducting a broad range of health- related research. Based on previous research experiences, Dr. Kim Bissell and her research group use cutting-edge sensors to evaluate participants’ responses, including tracking facial expressions, eye movement, galvanic skin response (GSR), and electroencephalography (EEG).
Compared to the traditional research method, the advantage of the HCB Lab is to tap into participants’ subconscious and involuntary behaviors that are not shown in the self-reported survey data.
Current research includes “Audience Analysis of Mediated Disability: An Examination of Self-Report and Physiological Responses to Disability in Sport" and "Enhancing Persuasive Oral Performance with Biometrics Assessment."
The HCB Lab is housed in Reese Phifer Hall in the College of Communication & Information Sciences at the University of Alabama.
