Dr. Kim BissellDr. Kim Bissell is a professor at The University of Alabama College of Communication and Information Sciences. Her primary research is conducted at the intersection of health, media, and children and specifically addresses the social effects of media in the areas of body image, health literacy, and stigmas associated with weight and obesity. Bissell serves as the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Communication and Information Sciences, Director of the Institute for Communication and Information Sciences, Director of Undergraduate Research, and Director of the Emerging Scholars Program at the University of Alabama. I teach a variety of research methods and oral performance courses within Communication Studies in the College of Communication and Information Sciences at The University of Alabama. In the Institute for Communication and Information Research, I work to conduct research in the College of Communication and Information Sciences. I also conduct research using Mobile Youth and Poverty Study Data. With respect to this study, I work with students and faculty who are interested in these data. Emily DirksEmily Dirks is a first year doctoral student at the University of Alabama. She is originally from a very small town in New Mexico and received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Texas Tech University. She went into her undergraduate degree trying to finish as quickly as possible but fell in love with research somewhere along the way. She loved it so much she decided to continue her education and pursue a career in the research field.
Her research interests include social issues in sports and their portrayal in media with a specific interest in gender and race equity in sports media. She hopes to work in the sports media industry after completed her doctorate doing research. When not working she loves a good sports or pop culture conversation. |
Suyu ChouSuyu Chou is a graduate student at The University of Alabama College of Communication & Information Sciences. She works in Health communication and biometrics Lab, the Alabama Reddit Research Group (ARRG), and Public Opinion Lab (POL). Her research interests lie in the intersection of public anxiety on social media, risk perception, and crisis management.
